Georg Fritzsch was born in Meißen and educated at the Hochschule für
Musik “Carl Maria von Weber” in Dresden. The artist served as solo-cel-
list of the Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg-Gera, whilst he completed
his studies as conductor in Dresden and Leipzig.
He became chief conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Südwest-
falen and the Tiroler Symphonie Orchester Innsbruck. The opera house
Hagen offered him an engagement as principal conductor, a position he
had until 2002 / 2003. In 2003 appointment as General Music Director of
the Kiel Opera House. He will finish his contract at the end of the season
2018 / 2019.
With an extensive symphonic and operatic repertoire that ranges from
Bach to contemporary music, Georg Fritzsch led numerous prestigious
orchestras including the Sächsiche Staatskapelle Dresden, Dresdner
Philharmonie, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Gürzenich Orches-
ter Köln and abroad the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Radio-Symphony
Orchester Basel, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland among
others. He has conducted at opera houses such as Sächsische Staats-
oper Dresden, Niedersächsische Staatstheater Hannover, the Aalto Thea-
ter Essen and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. He also maintains a close
relationship with the Staatstheater Stuttgart (among others Elektra, Der
Freischütz, Der fliegende Holländer). One of his up-coming engagements
includes the musical direction of the Ring-Cycle staged by Dieter Dorn
at the Gran Théâtre de Genève (2018 / 2019 season).
Georg Fritzsch is noted for his large repertoire and is an excellent inter-
preter of the works by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, Strauss and
Wagner, leading several world premieres (works by Matthus, Cristóbal
Halffter, Kunad).
